Highlights
-
Devil's Kitchen SinkholeThe ground gives way ahead of you here on the Soldier Pass Trail, deep in the Coconino National Forest outside Sedona, Arizona. Formed in the late 1880s — with an initial collapse noted in the early 1880s — this is one of at least seven sinkholes surrounding the city.
-
TlaquepaqueHere, State Route 179 splits Tlaquepaque into two halves straddling Oak Creek. Located on either side of State Route 179 as it crosses Oak Creek, a tributary of the Verde River, this place was founded in 1973 by Abe Miller as an artists' commune on land that had been a sycamore grove owned by Harry and Ruby Girard.
-
Airport MesaBeneath your feet, red rock trails converge at Airport Mesa, Sedona's scenic overlook cut into the Arizona high desert. From this lookout you are about 300 yards (900 ft) to the northeast of, and slightly below, Sedona Airport, so the airport sits just up the slope from you.
-
Sedona Ranger StationAhead of you sits the Sedona Ranger Station, a wood-frame bungalow the U.S. Forest Service built in 1917 to administer the Red Rock Ranger District of Coconino National Forest in Sedona, Arizona. The complex you see was conceived as a working hub: a residence, a barn and a pump house.
