Highlights

  • Jean Cocteau Cinema
    Jean Cocteau Cinema

Four partners opened the Collective Fantasy Cinema on this site in 1976, and the Santa Fe theater it became now bears the name Jean Cocteau Cinema. In 1976 four partners — Lynne Cohen, Mary Hether, Anne Lewis and Richard Szanyi — opened the first theater on this site.

  • Built in 1610, this is the oldest church building in the USA. It's even open for tours.
    San Miguel Mission

San Miguel Chapel, the Spanish colonial mission church you are facing, was originally built around 1610 and is often called the oldest church building in the continental United States. This was probably the first church in the new settlement, built across the Santa Fe River from the villa proper in the neighborhood known as the Barrio de Analco, an area once inhabited mainly by native people including Tlaxcalans who had accompanied the Spanish settlers from Mexico.

  • New Mexico State Capitol, Santa Fe, NM
    New Mexico State Capitol

Here is the Roundhouse, the New Mexico State Capitol. This is the seat of government of the U.S. state of New Mexico, located in central Santa Fe.

  • Santa Fe University of Art and Design

Picture St. Michael's College, founded here in 1859, now reborn as this art school. This campus began life as a Catholic school, founded as St. Michael’s College in 1859 at the urging of Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, who had arrived in New Mexico in 1851 and, after establishing Loretto Academy for girls in 1852, recruited the De La Salle Christian Brothers to open a brother school for boys; St. Michael’s held its first classes in the fall of 1859.

  • Santa Fe Indian School

Affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education, or BIE, the Santa Fe Indian School in front of you is a tribal boarding secondary school here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Federal Government established this institution to educate Native American children from tribes throughout the Southwestern United States, and while the school gives its founding date as 1890, contemporary reports show 40 students in April 1885 and 200 students in April 1887.
