Naval War College
This is the staff college and Home of Thought for the United States Navy at Naval Station Newport, now in front of you. Established on October 6, 1884, the college began in the building that had housed the Newport Asylum for the Poor on Coasters Harbor Island in Narragansett Bay, and from that moment it set out to educate and develop leaders, support combat readiness, and strengthen global maritime partnerships.

Salve Regina University is a private coeducational Roman Catholic university in Newport, Rhode Island. Founded in 1934 by the Sisters of Mercy, it traces its legal birth to a state charter granted on March 6, 1934 to Salve Regina College — translated from the Latin as "Hail Queen" — which specified that the college would exist "to promote virtue, and piety and learning".
