Highlights

  • Maryland State House as seen from College Ave
    Maryland State House

Annapolis holds a capitol where you can trace the Revolution's end. This is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, a building that dates to 1772 and still houses the Maryland General Assembly along with the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor.

  • Government House, the residence of the Governor of Maryland in Annapolis, Maryland, USA
    Government House

Here on State Circle rises Government House, the official residence of Maryland's governor since 1870. It sits on State Circle in the state capital town of Annapolis, immediately adjacent to the historic Maryland State House and the surrounding legislative buildings complex that serves the bicameral General Assembly of Maryland.

  • Herndon Monument
    Herndon Monument

Twenty-one feet of grey granite rise in front of you on the U.S. Naval Academy grounds, the Herndon Monument to Captain William Lewis Herndon. This is the Herndon Monument, erected in memory of Captain William Lewis Herndon, who died while helping to evacuate passengers and crew from his ship, the SS Central America, as she foundered in a storm on September 12, 1857.

  • Noon formation at Bancroft Hall, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, USA. As this was early in plebe summer, the midshipmen in the background are dressed accordingly.
    Bancroft Hall

Ahead of you in Annapolis, Maryland, sprawls Bancroft Hall, home to the entire brigade of midshipmen. This vast building is said to be the largest contiguous set of academic dormitories in the U.S. It was named for former U.S. Secretary of the Navy and historian/author George Bancroft, and today it is home for the entire brigade of 4,000 midshipmen.

  • The Chapel of the US Naval Academy
    Naval Academy Chapel

Rising above the academy grounds in Annapolis, the copper dome you now approach is known to midshipmen as the Brigade Chapel. This is one of nine designated chapel spaces at the Naval Academy, where Protestant and Catholic services are both held.
